Curry fish balls with radish is my favourite childhood street food in Hong Kong. It’s very tasty and easy to make it at home.

Curry Fish Balls with Radish01

Curry fish balls with radish were my most favourite childhood street food in Hong Kong. The street hawkers often used the deep-fried fish balls and boiled them in delicious spicy curry sauce. I couldn’t help myself to buy some on the way back home after school.

Whenever these curry fish balls are served in any parties, they’d be gone very quickly. This batch was made for a family gathering. The weather was a bit cold. So I kept them warm in my vacuum pot.

Every time I have this dish, I love taking a close look at the springy prawn ball sitting on top of the silky smooth tofu before taking a big bite. It’s an incredible feeling that you can feel all the flavours bursting out in your mouth at the moment you bite them.

Prawn and Tomato Curry

by · 4 comments
My family loves curry dishes very much. This prawn and tomato curry dish tastes divine. Tomato goes so well with curry. Its natural acidity just balances the salty and mildly hot curry.

Prawn and Tomato Curry01

This dish mainly makes use of the spices and fish sauce as a base. Beware that the saltiness of fish sauce is very different from brand to brand. If you’re using a different brand from mine, make sure you taste along the way of your cooking and add bit by bit of it until you’ll get the taste you want.

Prawn and Tomato Curry

This prawn curry dish can be made on the go, perfectly pair with a bowl of steamed rice.

Butter Prawns01

One of the good things that I love about food blogging is receiving feedback from my readers’ email. Through all the email exchanges, I shared their joy and satisfaction after trying my recipes. Thank you all for your encouraging feedback.

Amongst all the encouraging feedback, here’s a unique one from Eric Tan, a reader in Malaysia, that’s a wonderful recipe I didn’t ask for. When I saw this popular Malaysian recipe, Butter Prawns, fine-tuned by himself appearing in my inbox, I said to myself that was a must to try.

Yet, without any reason, it took me quite a long time to try it out. Finally, I’m glad I did. It’s a fantastic dish. Thank you, Eric.

Do you like eating salmon? Not only salmon tastes good, but also provides us with many unique health beneficial substances, like Omega-3 fatty acid that help improve our memory.

Speaking about cooking, it’s very easy and quick to cook salmon. You can eat it raw, pan fry it, boil it, steam it or bake it.

Baked Salmon with Herb Crust02

This time I baked salmon coated with a layer of herb crust. Thus the fish fillet won’t be dried up easily in an oven. The salmon fillet will keep its moist. A very tasty sauce is served with the salmon, taking the whole dish up a notch.

It tastes salty, sweet and sour with a hint of hotness. No worries, the hotness is very mild. My family found it’s just right. Having said that, you can adjust the amount of red chillies and ginger according to your preference.

Seafood & Tofu Soup (Quick Chinese Soup)

by · 12 comments
Being part of a luncheon is one of my favourite activities here. Not only am I able to taste different yummy foods cooked by my friends, but also can I be inspired by many new cooking ideas.

Before going to Tokyo, I went to a luncheon. One of my best friends, Kitty cooked a big bowl of soup for us. We were so curious about what’s inside. She told us, in an as-a-matter-of-fact tone, that’s seafoods and tofu soup. For us, it sounds amazing because many of us have seldom tried this soup before. When the soup was served, it’s topped with some Japanese weeds, that made the soup look more appealing to our appetite. The seafoods were really fresh, going so well with the silky tofu. Only one word did I find to describe the soup, it’s “incredible”.

Crispy Salmon Lettuce Congee (+ Video)

by · 1 comment
Tasty salmon fish congee, top with crispy fish skin and crunchy lettuce. It’s a perfect light meal all year round.

Salmon Lettuce Congee01

Had you lived in Hong Kong for a while, you would’ve known a very popular hand-made fish ball congee. The congee dish is made with a kind of fish that is not easily found in Australia.

To ease my craving for fish congee, I tried with salmon, skipping the making-fish-ball part, but keeping the fresh, crisp lettuce as the traditional congee often used.

Our family was so impressed with the taste and I love this cheater’s method saving lots of time and effort.

Steamed Prawns with Garlic and Fermented Beancurd

by · 3 comments
Way back many years ago, after tasting my mother-in-law’s steamed garlic prawns, I instantly fell in love of it, that’s totally different from the populated version.

Steamed Garlic Prawns01

Without any hesitation, I asked my mother-in-law to teach me. I couldn’t imagine how easy it is to make this dish. Not very long, I took the trick back to my kitchen and replicated my mother-in-law’s dish for my daughter to run a taste test.

Then guess what’s after? After that taste test, whenever my daughter sees me preparing some prawns, she would ask if I’m going to make this dish and wants to taste again.

I’m so glad that her western palate also loves this unique Chinese dish. Best of all, she feels it’s comparatively easy to peel the shells on her own.

Pineapple Ginger Prawns

Pineapple Ginger Prawns01

The pineapple I used was not too large, just big enough for making this dish. It’s fresh and sweet.

I like adding a secret ingredient to take this dish up a level. You might’ve known what it’s if you’ve viewed the previous pineapple dish, a bit similar to this one. Yes, it’s pickled ginger, that’s the one you enjoy at a Japanese sushi restaurant. Pickle ginger goes really well with pineapple.

Tomato Chilli Prawns (Chinese New Year)

by · 10 comments
There are many traditional dishes cooked during the Chinese New Year season. Many Chinese families like to cook prawns/shrimps, as the pronunciation of prawns in Cantonese is “ha” – much like “laughter”, that is associated with the idea of happiness and joy.

So prawns have been a must-have on a traditional Chinese New Year celebration menu.

Tomato Chilli Prawns01

My mum used to make a very simple and quick dish, stir-fried prawns with tomato sauce or ketchup that I love the most. Based on my mum’s cooking way, I tweaked it a bit by adding an amazing kick to this dish with Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce, since my kid has grown up, getting love to have hot foods more and more.

Tomato Chilli Prawns02

If you have young kids at home, you just skip the chilli sauce, or vice versa, add more if you want it hot to your liking.

Hope all of you a happy New Year!
